The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. When something injuries or puts pressure on this nerve, it can cause pain in the lower back that spreads to the hip buttocks and leg.
Common causes of sciatica
The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated disc. Herniated discs occur when the soft center of the spinal disc pushes through a crack in the exterior casing. Other causes of sciatica are degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and joint dysfunction. A herniated or bulging disc is one of the most common forms of spinal injury. Many people who suffer from herniated discs do not even know that anything is wrong until the condition impinges on a nerve in the spinal column and starts causing pain. Depending upon the location and severity of the injury, it can cause excruciating pain, loss of motion and many additional adverse effects.
Additional common symptoms of sciatica include:
- Pain in the back, buttocks, hip or lower extremities
- Leg and or foot numbness
- Pins and needles in the legs and buttocks
- Burning sensation
- Muscles weakness
Sciatica can be treated without drugs or surgery
Dr. Cheryl Snyder-Hughes will recommend various treatment therapies to overcome your sciatica pain. In addition to corrective exercises and stretching, Dr. Snyder-Hughes may recommend one or more additional treatments which may include chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, nutritional advice and physiotherapy.
